Family Birth Center Unveiled
Mercy Hospital Cadillac welcomed a new member to the Mercy family
on July 12, 2001. The Family Birth Center was unveiled for the
Cadillac community at 5 pm on Thursday July 12, 2001. "The
OB renovations were designed around family centered care, involving
both nurses and doctors in the design process," stated John
MacLeod, Mercy Hospital Cadillac CEO. Mercy Hospital Cadillac
has been involved in a $3 million capital campaign since June
of 2000, which concluded in November 2001.
"The Family Birth Center is a $2 million project
that will provide a family centered birthing experience,"
continued MacLeod. The former OB unit was on two separate floors
at Mercy Hospital. Labor and birth took place on one floor, then
the mother and baby moved to a second floor where they completed
their stay. With the new Family Birth Center, everyone is able
to stay on one floor. Moms are admitted to and give birth in a
homelike Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum room (LDRP) and
stay the whole time in one room. The new unit contains six LDRP
rooms. One of the LDRP room's contains a birthing tub, which allows
patients to labor and deliver in water. "We held nothing
back in our renovation of the Family Birth Center, we want people
to feel very comfortable while going through one of the biggest
moments in their lives," stated MacLeod.
The OB renovation is only stage one of a two-stage
process for Mercy Hospital. The second stage is a $1 million renovation
of the Emergency Room. The ER renovations include nearly doubling
the size of the current ER. The current facility was designed
to handle 8,000 ER visits a year and Mercy is seeing upwards of
18,000 visits per year. A few of the changes slated for the ER
renovations are a separate patient entrance, an urgent care area,
and a new nuclear medicine camera and area. These are just a few
of the changes slated for the new ER. "We are very excited
to get the stage two ER renovations started, these renovations
are critical to improving the health of the Cadillac community,"
stated MacLeod.
"We were thrilled that the Cadillac community joined us in
welcoming the new Family Birth Center into our Mercy Family,"
said MacLeod of the nearly 850-person turnout for the Open House.
"This reinforced our belief that our community appreciates
the facilities we provide, and supports our efforts for creating
a healthier community for generations to come."
Campaign for Mercy Cadillac Reaches $3 Million
Goal
Thanks to the generosity of the community, Mercy Hospital Cadillac
has completed a successful $3 million campaign.
Since June of 2000, the hospital has been raising
money to renovate both its Obstetrics Department and its Emergency
Room. The total project cost was $3 million $2 million
for the redesign and upgrade of the Obstetrics department and
$1 million for the Emergency Room renovations.
A lead gift of $2 million from Mercy's parent company,
Trinity Health, left $1 million to be raised locally. The funds
that needed to be raised locally were done so by a group of community
volunteers and Mercy Hospital Cadillac.
"The OB department and the Emergency Room were
in need of renovations. Our community leaders and volunteers saw
this, and with relentless energy and commitment they made it happen,"
said John MacLeod, CEO of Mercy Hospital Cadillac. "With
all that has happened, in our community, to see the support that
individual community members have shown toward this project has
been tremendous. Our community has really shown its support for
its local hospital. It really has something to be proud of."
A feasibility study early in the capital campaign
process indicated that employees and physicians of Mercy Hospital
Cadillac would be major contributors to the campaign. That has
happened, with the Mercy employees contributing $70,000 toward
the campaign and with 70 percent of the physicians also participating,
together raising $250,000. Mercy Hospital Cadillac's Auxiliary
was also a major contributor, donating $165,000.
The remainder of the monies needed to complete the
$1 million Emergency Room renovation came from individuals and
local corporations. "Our local corporations and community
members showed us that they truly support and believe in what
the hospital does here by contributing to this campaign. The over
450 friends of the hospital are the ones who made this campaign
such as success," said Bill Rzepka, Campaign for Mercy Cadillac
Tri-Chair.
"With what our community has seen happen locally,
it is great to have something like this successful campaign to
celebrate," continued Rzepka.
