Heart
Services
In
northern Michigan, distances between people and the services they
need sometimes seem overwhelming. For nearly a decade, the physicians
and hospitals of the Heart Network have worked to overcome this
obstacle and provide exceptional cardiac care to patients from
24 counties. Together, they have developed a nationally recognized
program that links primary care physicians, internal medicine
physicians, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, community
hospitals, and the services of Munson Medical Center. The Heart
Network's cardiothoracic surgeons are among the best in the country,
specializing in surgery of the chest including the heart, great
vessels, and lungs.
The physician and hospital partners of the Heart
Network have sought excellence and achieved it. Munson has one of the few programs in the country to repeatedly
achieve a Top
100 Hospital rating in both angioplasty and bypass — and is
one of only six hospitals to achieve overall Top
100 Hospital status during the same years.
The Network's cardiologists see patients in Alpena,
Cadillac, Frankfort, Grayling, Kalkaska, Prudenville, and Traverse
City. More than 300 cardiac catheterization procedures take place
annually within a mobile
unit, which regularly visits hospitals throughout the region.
In addition, preventive
education and care, patient
education, and rehabilitation
are offered through physicians and hospitals in many local communities.
