It is important for all parents to learn Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) in case your baby stops breathing.
Gently shake babys shoulder; try
to get a response from the baby. If unable, you should ask for
help.
Send someone else to phone EMS or 911.
Position baby flat on his back, on
a firm surface.
Open airway
Tilt head back gently and lift chin.
Check to see if baby is breathing.
Look for babys chest to rise
and fall.
Listen for the sounds of baby breathing.
Feel for babys breath on your
cheek.
If baby is not breathing, give two slow
breaths
Keep babys head tilted and lift
the chin.
Cover babys mouth and nose with
your lips.
Give 2 slow breaths (1 1/2 seconds
per breath).
Watch for chest to rise.
Wait for baby to exhale between breaths.
If the breaths do not go in, reposition
the babys head and try again. If babys chest
still does not rise, airway is blocked: follow steps for
choking baby.
Check for brachial (wrist) pulse
Place your first two fingers on inside
of babys arm. Count for five seconds.
If you feel a pulse, provide rescue
breathing, giving one breathe every three seconds.
If no pulse, give five chest compressions
and one breath
Place two fingers on breastbone, one
finger width below nipple line.
Quickly compress breastbone 1/2 to
1 inch with each thrust.
Do five compressions then give one
breath at a rate of 100 compressions and 20 breaths
per minute.
If baby does not respond and help is not
available, stop CPR after one minute and phone EMS or 911. Resume
CPR starting with chest compressions. Check every few minutes
for brachial pulse.
