Munson’s Physical Rehabilitation Services, serving Grand Traverse and surrounding counties, provides a full spectrum driving program.
The program is staffed by Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialists and is licensed by the State of Michigan.
The comprehensive Driver Rehabilitation program evaluates the skills required for safe driving and community mobility. The driving program is composed of four parts:
Driving Readiness — The purpose of the readiness evaluation is to provide information regarding the presence or emergence of skills required for driving. The program consists of a clinical evaluation to examine physical, visual perceptual, and cognitive abilities as well as general road sign knowledge, and dynamic visual processing skills examination as a passenger in the driver assessment vehicle. The evaluation will take approximately three hours including discussion of results and recommendations.
Driving Assessment —
The purpose of the driving assessment is to provide information regarding safety in driving an automobile following a change in medical status. The program consists of a clinical evaluation to examine physical, visual perceptual, and cognitive abilities as well as general road sign knowledge, and an on-the-road evaluation in the driver assessment vehicle. The evaluation will take approximately two to three hours including discussion of results and recommendations.
Driving Training — The purpose of training sessions is to improve the necessary skills required to safely drive an automobile. Lessons are recommended when there is evidence of an ability to improve and learn new skills.
Community Mobility — The purpose of the community mobility program is to help individuals identify their resources for accessing the community during periods when they are unable to drive due to injury or illness. The Occupational Therapist will assist an individual and their family in devising a community mobility plan designed to meet basic needs, such a obtaining groceries and getting to medical appointments. In addition, social needs will be identified and a transportation plan will be developed to assist in meeting these needs.
