Following
a diagnosis of End
Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), renal replacement therapy options
need to be discussed and a treatment option chosen. A Nephrologist
can explain the available treatments and assist in selecting the
best treatment option. Several factors to be considered include
type of kidney disease, physical abilities, support system, transportation
availability, lifestyle, emotional status, and personal preference.
Even after an option is chosen, it is possible to
switch to a different treatment in the future. Treatment types
may also need to be changed due to medical reasons.
Options
for treatment of kidney failure are: kidney
transplantation and dialysis. Dialysis is a medical term defining
the cleansing of waste products and the removal of excess fluid
from blood. There are two types of dialysis: Hemodialysis
and Peritoneal
Dialysis.
Patients also have the right to choose no treatment,
or once treatment has begun, decide to stop treatment. Talk to
your family and physician about your wishes and alternate
care. Expectations and possible outcomes will be explained
so you can be supported in your plan.
